Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated during his trip to Washington that the Russian president's decision to request negotiations with the US president demonstrates the Kremlin is on the defensive. Zelenskyy commented, "We can already see that Russia is rushing to resume conversations as soon as it learns of cruise missiles." These remarks addressed recent comments about providing long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Political Developments and International Reactions

An ex- US state department official, Dan Fried, observed, "The Russian leader is attempting to derail the momentum toward increased sanctions on the Kremlin." He added, "We'll see on Friday, but the likelihood of moving toward a truce by pressuring Moscow to engage sincerely seem to have decreased."

The situation came after Trump had recently been hardening his language toward Russia until Thursday's conversation with Putin, which the Russian government described as "extremely open and constructive."

EU Energy Restrictions and Economic Impact

EU authorities have set a mandate for fuel importers into the EU to demonstrate their products are not made from Russian crude, as stated in a document published on recently. This step is part of the European Union's forthcoming prohibition on imports of refined products processed from Russian crude, which is included in its 18th restrictive measures against Moscow over its military actions in the region.

Market experts noted that trading activity appeared to be factoring in the potential end of Indian imports of Russian crude. Several oil processors in India are preparing to reduce Russian oil imports, with projections of a gradual decrease, according to sources knowledgeable about the matter.

"This is a favorable turn for the crude oil price as it would eliminate a major buyer of Russian oil," said Tony Sycamore, noting that oil prices were steady on Thursday.

Military Developments and Energy Attacks

A large-scale Moscow's drone and rocket assault targeted gas facilities in eastern Ukraine on the same day, resulting in outages in multiple areas. Authorities in Ukraine reported that Russia launched numerous of unmanned vehicles and many of missiles, along with aerial munitions.

"During this fall, the Russians use daily opportunities to strike at our energy infrastructure," declared Ukraine's president, adding that attacks affected the regions of northern Ukraine, eastern Ukraine, Poltava, northeastern Ukraine and Vinnytsia.

Global Political Reactions

Ukraine's envoy to the United States, the Ukrainian ambassador, stated that Moscow demonstrated its real attitude to peace through the "terror" of these attacks. "Russia once again opted for missiles over talks, turning this attack into a clear setback to current diplomatic initiatives," Stefanishyna commented.

At the same time, the European Union's foreign policy chief, the bloc's representative, announced that the European Union had no choice but to strengthen defensive systems against Russia. She revealed a "roadmap" to prepare for possible security challenges by 2030, featuring a new defensive network to be fully operational by the end of 2027.

This initiative, dubbed the "European drone defence initiative," is projected to start operations initially by the end of 2026 and be fully functioning by the end of 2027. Brussels aims to obtain the backing of EU leaders at a meeting next week.
