Amid ongoing diplomatic efforts, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has disclosed that the United States has outlined a proposed peace plan encompassing security guarantees for his nation spanning a period of a decade and a half.

The Framework's Specifics

The Ukrainian leader noted that in the course of critical discussions with American leader President Trump, he had asked for security guarantees for a duration of 50 years. Yet, the current draft calls for a reduced assurance of fifteen years from America.

It is not clear what these assurances would assume, but the president has been insisting on "defense pledges similar to NATO's Article 5, inspired by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's founding principle that an assault against a single ally should be seen as an attack on all.

Negotiation Developments

According to Zelenskyy, US security guarantees for his country under the modified 20-point proposal have been fully agreed upon, although the American leader expressed more caution, putting the figure at more like ninety-five percent.

Both leaders said that headway was accomplished during the meeting at the US president's residence. President Trump did note, however that there were "one or two tough" outstanding issues, particularly regarding territorial disputes.

Prerequisites for Engagement

On another front, Zelenskyy stated to reporters that a talks with Russian leadership would be possible after the US and European leaders agreed on a Ukraine-proposed peace plan to end the war.

This comment comes after the US President told the media that he believed a three-way discussion between Moscow, Kyiv, and Washington could happen once the timing is appropriate.

Historical Context

Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin have been without a summit since the end of 2019. That previous engagement, brokered by the the presidents of France and chancellor of Germany, was intended to renew efforts to end the ongoing conflict.

Subsequently, in the spring of 2025, the Kremlin leader declined to go to Istanbul for discussions with Zelenskyy, turning down a face-to-face meeting suggestion to engage in peace talks in Istanbul.

Key Sticking Points

A key point of contention continues to be the future of the Donbas area in eastern Ukraine. Trump said that a plan to turn the area, which Russia largely controls, into a demilitarised zone remains "unresolved".

Trump further commented that it will be apparent within weeks whether the conflict can be concluded.

Both sides have stressed that the lengthy peace talks would carry on as they strive for a final resolution to the multi-year war.
